10 Toxic Household Products For Pets
When I first got my cat there were so many things to think about. What kind of food, treat, toys should I get, what kind of litter is best, should I let him outside, should he sleep with me, etc...
But one of the things that I never really thought about was the cleaning products. Mainly what everyday cleaning products would be toxic to my cat.
So here are some toxic household products
Bleach
Bleach is a strong cleaning agent that should be respected and used with care. Without proper use, it can cause migraines, muscle weakness, skin rash, vomiting, and in extreme cases, esophageal perforation.
But to be real, as long you follow the proper instructions on the bleach label, store safely, and practice some common since there is nothing to worry about. Just be cautious.
2. Window Cleaners
Now, not all of the window cleaning sprays or products are bad. But the ones we have to watch out for are the ones that contain ammonia.
Ammonia is another strong cleaning agent that can cause irritation in the eyes, skin, throat, and lungs. If strong order is inhaled it can damage your airways and mucus membrane.
3. Essential Oils
If you want to use them, great, just be cautious that you don’t use them where pets may come into contact with them. Depending on the significant variation of toxicity among specific oils. If ingested your pet may suffer liver damage, gastrointestinal upset, or central nervous system depression.
4. Carpet Shampoos and Fresheners
These can cause coughing, a runny nose, sneezing, and mild irritation on their paws if walked on.
If in use, make sure that your pets are away from areas with these cleaners until they are properly cleaned up.
5. Vinegar and Water
This is a great cheap cleaner! But should still be handled and stored with care. Vinegar is acidic by nature. If ingested, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, general pain, and oral irritation. This is mainly if it is concentrated or undiluted.
Now of course this isn’t a complete list, but it’s a start.
You can continue to use these products as long as you follow the directions on the labels and store them properly. Just remember to always use common sense when using any type of cleaning agent and play it safe.
Let me know if you want more like this in the future and Happy New Year!
